Top Wind Destinations in April: Aruba & Coche April 22, 2009 |
|
Hey, all you wind addicts: It has been a long and hard winter, spring is here but the really nice weather is still 6 to 8 weeks away. If you are ready to get away, forget your wetsuit, pack just your harness, a pair of shorts, and a toothbrush and be prepared to sail until you drop. This month’s picks:
Aruba
If you have never sailed in Aruba, this destination should be on your short list of must do. Aruba is windy. There are two wind seasons in Aruba, windy and very windy. One of the Professional Windsurfing High Wind events is held here every year.
What to expect, everything from shallow, flat, side-off to side-on mast high waves depending on where you decide to sail or kite. Just a note, there are kiting limits at Fisherman’s huts; morning and afternoon sessions only; but don’t fear rent a car and explore other beaches as they do not have limits. As the low season starts you should be able to find many great deals to Aruba. The beaches are amazing, the wind unbelievable, great hotels, nightlife, casinos, restaurants, bars and really safe. Did we mention the water temp. 27 - 30 Celsius.
Coche There is not much to do here but SAIL, KITE and rest (your body will need it at the end of the day). Coche is easy to get to; just fly to Margarita and catch a 20 minute water taxi from the town of El Yaque (one of the world’s most popular Kiting and Windsurfing destinations). You might just decide to spend a couple of days in El Yaque before heading over to Coche. Both destinations are unique in their own way. In Coche, the conditions are butter flat, side-off. Don’t worry if you have a problem, there are always rescue boats on the stand-by. Endless days sailing or kiting, quite evenings with new friends, great cheap food and drinks. You will improve after a week, you will be satisfied, and you will be OHH…… so relaxed.
Coche, is not for everyone; the hotels are very basic, the price for accommodations is OK; but a little expensive for what you get. If all you want is great sailing or kiting, great people and a little rest; Coche may be your type of heaven, definitely not to be missed.
