Venezualian Archipelago Los Roques
Hey, all you wind addicts:
This month we would like to take you to one of the most remote and spectacular wind destinations in Caribbean: The Venezualian Archipelago of Los Roques.
Los Roques
The Archipelago of Los Roques is a Marine National Park located approximately 320 km (200 miles) off the north coast of Venezuela. The archipelago is famous for its fantastic tranquil scenery; exceptionally beautiful beaches, of white sand and turquoise warm waters. There are numerous keys, bays and lagoons and steady winds all year round.
This is a dream destination; the wind blows an average of 18 knots consistently year round. The stunning beauty of this place and the variety of conditions and locations will make your vacation unforgettable and unbelievable! Shallow lagoons and small bays have flat water, glass like conditions that are safe and perfect for beginners. More skilled sailors should try island-to-island sailing. It is SO much fun! While sailing island-to-island you will get good bump-and-jump conditions.
The main island of El Gran Roque hosts the only airport (LRV) and accomodations. Fly either to Caracas or Porlamar and then make a connection to Los Roques. Roundtrip flight from Caracas or Porlamar would cost about $280 US per person. All posadas (little hotels) are also located a short walk from the airstrip. They line up along the main street of the town. We particularly recommend Macanao Lodge and Posada Movida. They are clean, and well maintain.
You can get windsurfing rentals and lessons on Francisqui Island. A local fisherman will get you there from Grand Roque in no time. 1 week windsurfing gear rental would cost about $270 US. As for kitesurfing some posadas can organize kitesurfing rental for you at about $45 US a day from rental centers based in Caracas or Porlamar. If you need a break from sailing take a hike up the two volcanic humps on Gran Roque island or try kayaking the islands' mangrove areas or simply arrange a tour of the islands with one of the fishermen. Also the diving and snorkeling around the untouched islands is some of the best in the Caribbean!
And most importantly just re-eeee-lax!
