The strong, dry north winds of the Aegean Sea called Meltem blow here from about mid-May to mid-September. Usually the wind starts in the early morning reaching 16–20 knots by 11:30 a.m. Later in the afternoon it can pick up to 30 knots when an additional sea breeze kicks in. The wind dies out at sun set.
