Hello, Wind junkies:

Happy New Year, may 2012 bring wind to where ever you find yourself!

This time of year you will find wind in just about any destination; with so many choices, we decided on the little known, unexplored, and exciting island of Ambergris Caye in Belize. It is surprisingly easy to get to, considering how off the beaten track it is. There are direct daily flights from Canada and the US. Belize is home to the second largest Barrier reef in the World; if you have ever dreamed of Sailing or Kiting “The Great Barrier Reef” then check-out the one in your backyard.

Although, it is quite easy to get there the trip can be an adventure in itself. Fly to Belize City then take the 90 minute boat ride to the town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. Ambergris Caye is the largest and most developed island in Belize; with its own airport (San Pedro) it is just a 15 minute flight but I like the adventure of the boat ride. Once there you will find; great restaurants, bars, café, endless options for accommodations and best of all wind, with over 20 miles of waist deep, crystal clear water.

This is heaven, you don’t need booties or a wetsuit (a shorty or rash guard is a good idea for the intense sun). It is a beginner’s paradise, and for the advanced take a ride out to the reef, make a down winder or do some island hopping. The wind usually blows in the morning, then drops off around lunch with the best wind in the afternoon when the thermals kick in around 2pm until sun set.

There is quality rental equipment and lessons available; if you are bringing your own gear pack don’t forget the small stuff. Although most of the time the conditions are Side-On to ON shore, consistent 15-20knots; the occasional cold fronts will bring over 25 knots for several days (Feb. tend to be the windiest month).

Try to tear yourself away from the beach to make a trip to the mainland. Explore the rain forest, cenotes, waterfalls, the Mayan ruins and take a jungle tour to check out the monkeys, jaguars, and endless other wildlife.

Ambergris cays is still quite undeveloped but tourism is growing so make plans and be one of the lucky few to have this paradise to yourself before everyone else finds it.
