Hey, all you wind addicts:

Are you ready for some serious wind action? This month we would like to take you to one of the windiest and friendliest Caribbean islands: Barbados. The trade winds pick up in June. The “Bajans" people are perhaps the most welcoming West Indian nation. Wind, friends, sun and fun: this is what it is all about, isn’t it?

Now let’s to Barbados:

The gorgeous pink- and white-sand beaches of Barbados, 20 knots of wind and 29°C (85°F) air temperatures in June are not everything you will get when you visit the island. It is the people that make this island so warm and beautiful! I know, they say “friendly locals” about pretty much any island to get the tourists but this time it is completely true. Bajans are very open people, always ready to fill you in on the latest island news and jokes; and when it comes to wind-water sports just watch those neat tricks they do on the water. You will learn a lot by simply watching.

For the best kiteboarding and windsurfing gear and advice get to The Irie man Action Shop at Silver Rock beach. Famous Brain Talma (Caribbean Big “Z”) gives lessons and rents equipment and offers greater deals than any other shop on the island. Most importantly, he is a true representative of the “Bajans" people. You will have a good time.

Once you are all geared up, let’s see where you can go to sail. Silver Rock beach is no doubt the number one place to be. But there are other places. Consider going to Silver Sands beach and Oistins Bay. Silver Sands beach is right near Silver Rock. It is relatively small beach with off-shore wind conditions and strong surf. It is not recommended for beginners! 5 miles from Silver Sands, A stretch of white sandy beach on Oistins Bay is perfect for beginners and free-stylers. The prevailing wind direction is from the left side on-shore. The winds are constant but the sea is generally flat and calm. You can also go to Long beach, or even try your luck at Crane beach.

The two best hotels for windfurfers and kiters in Barbados are Silver Point Hotel and Peach & Quiet (the website does not do justice to the place!). Silver Point Hotel is a new boutique hotel located right on Silver Rock Beach ($150 US per night). Brian Talma’s Action Shop will be just steps away from your room. Also the hotel always has special packages for kitesurfers which include accommodation, breakfast and a kitesurfing beginner course. Peach & Quiet is a simple and charming adult only hotel ($109 US per night) located 5 minutes walk from Silver Rock Beach. The hotel was built in a Mediterranean style and it is very cozy and clean. They include an amazing breakfast with freshly baked breads and muffins.

Speaking about food, we have to mention that eating out in Barbados is quite pricy. But there is a secret dining place you should know about: Oistins Fish Market. Started as a small fisherman catch market, nowadays it has become a dining plaza filled with little restaurants and kiosks that serve excellent food for only $7 a meal. Come after 6 p.m. Music and fun are guaranteed. Don’t miss the regular Friday night party with thrilling Soca and Calypso performances at the fish market stage.

If you feel like doing anything else there are tons of attractions and sightseeing opportunities: Caves, Gullies, Nature Parks, Nightlife, Shopping. The Barbados National Trust gives hiking tours of the island throughout the year. All hikes are free. Every hotel provides a free magazine “Ins and Outs of Barbados” which give you a full schedule of the hikes. This is a good opportunity to explore the island as well as to meet people both locals and visitors. Every hike finishes with a little gathering or a party. Yup, Bajans love to party!
