Kiteboarding and Windsurfing at Ilha do Guajiru, Brazil September 01, 2010 |
Return to Windresorts Home Page Hello, all you wind addicts: September is a great time to have a windsurfing or a kitesurfing holiday. Yes, most of Caribbean and Northern American destinations are either in the middle of a hurricane season or have inconsistent winds at this time of the year. But don’t get discouraged, just yet. There is an awesome place in Brazil which has become a kiteboarding and windsurfing paradise. Nicknamed "The FlatWaterSea” beautiful Ilha do Guajirú is a new hot spot for wind water sports.
Ilha do Guajirú, Brazil: It is surrounded by beautiful mangroves, sand dunes and a river. You will be enchanted by the stunning beauty of the place, local people and Brazilian culture. There are many lagoons with a lot of space, turquoise waters and different secret spots around.
Windsurfers stay at the main lagoon which is not as shallow or go to the open sea. Kitesurfers who don’t worry about a fin sticking into the sand have a few hundred little coves and shallow beaches around the area all to themselves. If you are a kiter bring small kites, 7-12 m.
Windsurfing rental is on the main land inside the Lagoon. There is also an abundance of kiteschools/rental shops located at Praia da Barra. Some bed and breakfast places (called locally posadas) also have the gear rental shop/school and a restaurant on the spot. Hence if you book the accommodation, you can book a discounted land package which would include airport transfer, accommodation, breakfast, kite lessons/gear rental and sightseeing tours. We recommend checking with Windy Addiction for a package. They have such packages starting from $375 (groups of 4) per week.
Most posadas offer a basic simple accommodation. If you want a bit more luxurious rooms consider the Wind Village with its luxury apartments located only 20 meters from the widest part of the lagoon. Wind village also offers a Wind Guarantee Program which allows you to stay on No Wind days for Free! Ilha do Guajiru used to be an island, but it is now linked to the land so you can access it easily by car. To get there fly to Fortaleza, rent a car and head north on the new high way to Itarema. The Itarema town is only 4 km (2.5 miles) away from the island. Important: Canadian and USA citizens need to apply for an Entrance Visa to Brazil at the nearest Brazilian Consulate before taking a flight. (It is waived for EU passport holders.) Apply at least 3-4 weeks in advance.
For those, loving some sightseeing there is an endless list of thing to do and to see. Ilha do Guajiru is also an ecotourism paradise. Take a day trip to breathtaking sand dunes of Jericoacoara National Park or a horseback riding tour, or bird watching, or scuba diving, or hiking, or visit the turtle sanctuary, take a traditional brazilian “fight dance” - Capoeira lessons. Or simply go snorkeling directly in front of the Barraca’s at Praia da Barra.
